Background
From the Christchurch Press 4th October 2008
A five-year-old girl left briefly in the children's area of a public library
was indecently assaulted by an elderly man.
In the Christchurch District Court yesterday, Chinese-born Ting Shue Yee, 80, admitted a charge of indecent assault. He appeared in court with the help of an interpreter. Sergeant Dave Murray told the court the mother had taken her family to the Shirley Library on May 8, taking them to an area set aside for children and families.
Yee, who had used the library for years, was there the same day. The girl's mother had to leave the area briefly to take another child to the toilet, and while she was away Yee motioned to the child to sit by him. He began to rub her feet, and then tried to take her underwear off. The child received pain and mild injuries from the assault.
When her mother returned, the girl told her what had happened. When confronted, Yee, a first offender, admitted the offence, Murray said. A charge of sexual violation was withdrawn by police. Yee was remanded on bail to January 23 for sentence by Judge Stephen Erber. Yee's bail is subject to strict conditions.
