A man offered $1000 to his 11-year-old victim of sexual abuse - but it was too late to save him from a prison sentence. Farm contractor, Reuben James Woods (31), had continually denied two representative charges that he indecently assaulted a boy then aged nine and another charge of unlawful sexual connection. In May, a jury found him guilty of the indecent acts but acquitted him of sexual connection. Yesterday, when Woods was sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court, his lawyer said Woods wanted to offer his victim $1000.

But Judge Allan Roberts said it was the first the court had been told that Woods wanted to offer the emotional harm reparation. The judge said he would not take it into consideration in sentencing. Woods had continually denied the offending, shown no remorse and blamed the charges on revenge and until yesterday offered no emotional harm reparation, the judge said. "I take the view you effectively seduced the boy and you exposed him to pornography. You robbed that child of his innocence. The impact on him and his mother are already significant," Judge Roberts said. He sentenced Woods to one year, eight months' jail and ordered the $1000 be paid to the young boy. After sentencing, several women left court crying. Another said: "He was stitched up."

Midhirst farm contactor Reuben James Woods has been found guilty by a jury in the New Plymouth District Court on two of the three sexual charges he faced. The 31-year-old was acquitted on the most serious charge of sexual violation, but he was found guilty on two charges of doing an indecent act on a boy aged under 12. Judge Allan Roberts remanded him on bail for sentence on July 9.
