Background
From Waikato Times story Aug 8th 1997
A Coromandel Peninsula man convicted of raping a young girl "rode the coat tails" of another man jailed for sexually abusing the same girl, a Hamilton judge said.
At the High Court in Hamilton yesterday, Justice Penlington jailed John Robert Wood, 73, of Waikino, near Waihi, for seven years on two rape charges, two charges of indecent assault on a girl under 12, one of indecent assault on a girl under 16 and one of indecent assault. He ordered Wood to pay $10,000 to the girl, now 19, after Wood sold his house, which is now on the market. Justice Penlington said the man knew another man, convicted in 1989 for sexually abusing the young girl.
Wood made the girl write "revolting" letters to him detailing the other man's sex abuse "to turn him on". He also gave her money - up to $40 at a time. Evidence at a jury trial in June showed Wood had raped the girl, once in toilets near a Waihi duck pond, flushing the toilets repeatedly to cover the sound he made, Justice Penlington said. The other time was at a swimming hole. Mr Allan painted a picture of "a little girl in a small town". "She went into town with her sisters and girlfriends and there's the accused cruising around in his car." Wood's children and stepchildren were in the gallery to support him.
Wood's lawyer, Steve Williams, said Wood continued to deny he had had anything to do with the girl sexually before she was 16. Justice Penlington said the man had appealed a trial earlier this year, where he was found guilty of one rape charge and other sex charges, ordered to pay $20,000 reparation and jailed for 6 years 6 months. The appeal court ordered a retrial.
Mr Williams said Wood had worked hard all his life on the railways, served his country in war. He brought up children and stepchildren who said he had never behaved sexually towards them, had never offended before and had shown no inclination towards the sort of behaviour he was convicted of. He denied a link with the other man convicted for sexually abusing the same girl.
