Background
From the Press ( Christchurch ) Nov 23, 2001
A Christchurch man who repeatedly sexually abused a young boy in circumstances "not far removed from rape" in the mid-1980s is beginning a five-year jail term.
Robin Neil Wolland, 46, continues to maintain his innocence despite the guilty verdicts by a High Court jury in Christchurch on eight charges including indecent assault, inducing indecent acts, sexual violation, attempted sodomy, and sodomy. Allister Davis, defending, said the convictions would be challenged on appeal because one of the prosecution witnesses had written to him to cast doubt on the reliability of her own evidence at trial. Justice Willy Young said that was not a matter he could take into account and he had to sentence Wolland on the verdicts.
The offending began in May 1981 when the boy was aged 10 and continued until 1984, although the sodomy charges were probably when the boy was aged about 12 or 13. The complainant, now 30, attributes problems with alcohol and women to the abuse, Justice Young said.
"Although I come up short of finding the sodomy was equivalent of rape, it was on a boy of 12 or 13 and was not far removed from rape." His Honour said a mitigating factor was that Wolland had stopped offending when the boy asked him to.
