An Invercargill schoolboy who sexually preyed on children as young as two has been jailed for a total of four years. Alan Gilbert Wilson, 16, was denied name suppression when he appeared before Judge Phil Moran for sentence on 22 sex charges involving four children. The charges, initially laid in the Youth Court, were transferred to the Invercargill District Court for sentence because of their serious nature. The charges related to offences from May last year, when Wilson was 15, to May this year.

Seven of the charges related to a two-year-old girl who was indecently assaulted by Wilson once and was forced to participate in oral sex on five occasions. Wilson also admitted to twice trying to rape the girl. A 10-year-old girl was the victim of a further nine offences, the most serious of which were three charges of rape. A further four charges, including one of sodomy, involved an 11-year-old boy.

The fourth victim was a 15-year-old girl who was indecently assaulted by Wilson and was permitted by Wilson to do an indecent act. Wilson was sentenced to four years' jail for the rape and sodomy charges, two years' jail for the attempted rape charges, a year's jail for the charges relating to oral sex and six months' jail for the indecency charges. All the terms were to be served concurrently.

A young convicted paedophile who has allegedly started a relationship with the mother of a four-year-old child is back behind bars after breaching his parole terms. Alan Gilbert Wilson, 20, originally from Invercargill, appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday charged with having contact with children under 16 without adult supervision approved by a probation officer.

Wilson was convicted in the Invercargill District Court in October 2000 on 22 sex charges involving four children and jailed for four years. He was released on parole in April. Under the parole conditions he is required to live at a Woolston address with a minder and not have contact (without permission) with children under 16. The Ashburton mother, with whom he is said to be having a relationship, is pregnant. Wilson is also accused of associating with a couple who have two children aged four and five.

Wilson pleaded not guilty to the parole breach charge yesterday and was remanded in custody until August 2. His lawyer, Michael Starling, applied for name suppression but it was denied. Judge Stephen Erber said concerns about at-risk prisoners being released meant the interests of the public over-rode those of Wilson. Wilson is already facing another charge of breaching parole, which arose when he allegedly did not return to his Christchurch address in May. The issues around the release of young sex offenders into the community were highlighted this week by the case of Lloyd McIntosh, whose record includes the rape of a toddler and a six-year-old girl.

McIntosh has this week been released under conditions after serving half of an 18-month sentence imposed last year for the assault of an intellectually handicapped girl. Corrections was to have released McIntosh to a house in the small Canterbury community of Halkett but backed down under pressure from outraged residents. McIntosh will now be released to a self-care unit at Christchurch Prison and then take up residence, with two minders, in a house on prison land in Templeton but outside the prison confines.

A man subject to a long-term supervision order that banned him from associating with children was spotted boarding a bus with a child, a court has been told. The Christchurch District Court was told Alan Gilbert Wilson, 21, had been seen by a probation officer boarding a bus with a child. Wilson, who admitted two counts of breaching supervision, was subject to a 10-year supervision order in which he was not to associate with anyone aged 16 or under, unless an approved adult was present.

Without the knowledge of the Probation Service, Wilson had got a job in a cafe, where he had the possibility of associating with children. The arrangement would never have been approved, the court was told. In separate offending, Wilson also admitted charges of robbery, theft of a car, arson and driving while disqualified. Sergeant Dave Jory said Wilson drove to a Christchurch dairy in a stolen station wagon, demanded money from the 52-year-old female occupant and got away with $800 after grabbing money from the till.

He was identified by members of the public from a photo published in The Press. Spoken to by police, Wilson claimed he bought the car. He admitted robbing the dairy, but said he got only $40. He denied knowing his photograph had been published in The Press, and told police he had asked someone to dispose of the car. Reparation of the stolen $800 plus $7500 for the car was sought. Wilson was remanded in custody for sentence on October 21 by Judge David Holderness
