Manuel Williams knocked on the door of an Avondale house in the middle of the day, dragged a 39 year old woman who answered onto the front lawn, raped her, stabbed her in the neck with a broken bottle, continued to rape her, sodomise her, and sexually abused her before he tried to kill her by biting her throat. (Sunday Star Times, no date, 1994)

Williams (then aged 22) told police he asked the woman where Hardman Street was, and "God said Now". He repeatedly attacked and sexually assaulted her over an hour and a half. He had been a patient at Carrington hospital two week prior to his release in February 1987. Williams telephone police the next morning after his crimes, and mentioned the events of the previous day, and told police that God was wanting him to kill another lady and he was going to Kingseat to hand himself in.

Williams had a history of mental illness. He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was a patient in a mental institution in New South Wales. His family decided he would be better of in New Zealand and he returned in early 1986. He was committed to Carrington hospital in December 1986 where he was again diagnosed with schizophrenia. He stood trial in April 1988. He was found guilty by a jury but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. On appeal his convictions were quashed and was committed as a special patient.
