Background
From the Christchurch Press 21st February 2001
A man who sexually violated a woman beside a railway track has been sentenced in the Christchurch District Court to 4 years 6 months jail. Tia Matiu Wells, 38, appeared for sentencing yesterday, after conviction on two sexual violation charges and one of theft as a servant. The unemployed Christchurch man pleaded guilty to the theft charge, after stealing scrap metal worth $7127 from a former employer. He was on bail for two sexual violation charges at the time of the theft.
The violation incidents occurred some time after midnight on January 30 last year. Wells and the female victim had been drinking separately at a family function on Waterloo Road. The more Wells had to drink, the more obnoxious he became. When the woman left there were no taxis available so she decided to walk home. Wells offered to walk with her but when they got to a railway line he pulled her to the ground, pulled off her pants and attacked her twice.
