Background
Taranaki Daily News story 30th August 2007
A New Plymouth man convinced a woman to take naked photos of her young daughter and give them to him so he could help investigate her suspicion the girl had been abused. Murray John Waller (39) persuaded the woman to take nude photos of her eight-year-old daughter, as well as photos of her in various sexual poses. The garage attendant claimed he would forward the photos on to someone within the police. In the New Plymouth District Court yesterday, Waller was sentenced on two charges of doing an indecent act on a girl under 12 and 24 charges of possessing objectionable computer images.
When police searched his computer earlier this year they found 21 pictures of the girl and more than 3000 images of child pornography, downloaded on to his computer from the Internet. Crown prosecutor Justin Marinovich said the indecent act charges relating to the girl were unique because Waller didn't physically take the photos. "He got the mother to take some photos for his own use," Mr Marinovich said. The images Waller sourced from the Internet included children engaged in indecent acts with other children and with adults. A number of them depicted bestiality and violence.
Defence counsel Julian Hannam said Waller had always maintained he was accumulating the images to assist police in Auckland investigating child pornography. Mr Hannam said Waller had never paid for any images or subscribed to a paedophile website. Judge Allan Roberts said the images were disgusting. He described Waller's claim of assisting an Auckland detective as ludicrous and nonsense. "Your ploy on the weak-willed - that you had some sort of clout with the (police) department and if they indulged you with photographs you will be able to help them - is nonsense," Judge Roberts said. He sentenced Waller to a total of 28 months' jail.
