Background
From a Dominion story 25/09/1998
A HAMILTON MAN jailed yesterday for 13 years for manslaughter told police his victim was a racist who deserved a bashing but probably did not deserve to die. Shane Vallis, 25, was also sentenced in the High Court at Hamilton by Justice Hammond for rape, wounding with intent and unlawful entry. Justice Hammond described Vallis as a danger to the public. Trevor McLisky, 73, was found dead in the Frankton suburb shed he had been living in on the site of the former New Empire Hotel on July 16.
Justice Hammond said Vallis had been seen taunting Mr McLisky the week before his body was found and Mr McLisky had made racist comments and pulled a knife. Vallis returned to the shed four days later and punches were exchanged. Vallis returned that night with a length of timber and hit Mr McLisky repeatedly in a savage attack, the judge said. Mr McLisky suffered head gashes, multiple fractures and an ear was almost torn off. He died of asphyxia brought on by at least seven fractured ribs. Vallis then went to another shed where three other transients were sleeping. He hit a man and woman with a piece of timber and raped the woman. The third man was unharmed. Defence lawyer Thomas Sutcliffe said Vallis had led a tragic life.
