Background
From the Manawatu Standard 3rd July 2007
Kahui and Darrin Harry Tawharu, both armed with knives, broke into a Bryant Street flat while its two female occupants were asleep. They took the women into separate rooms where Tawharu raped one and Kahui indecently assaulted the other.
The women were then taken from the house and walked through the streets for about an hour before being released. Both men were arrested and, in August, 1992, Kahui was sentenced to eight years imprisonment after he was found guilty of indecent assault, conspiracy to rape, kidnapping, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault. Tawharu was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison.
