Sentenced to preventive detention with a ten year minimum non-parole period in May 1997
Background
Dominion story from mid 1997
A 65-YEAR-OLD used his position as a Maori elder to gain the confidence of the parents of the prepubescent girls he abused, prosecutor Lisa Boon said in the High Court at Wellington yesterday. Miss Boon said this as part of her successful argument for Tunuiarangi Tautuhi to be given an indefinite sentence of preventive detention for sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl in Lower Hutt last year. The preventive detention sentence means Tautuhi must serve 10 years before being considered for parole.
Tautuhi was first convicted of abducting a girl in 1971 and his sex abuse convictions culminated in an eight-year sentence for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl in 1988. Miss Boon said Tautui befriended the parents of his victims using a quasi-religious approach to families who respected him as an elder within the Maori community. Justice Neazor said Tautuhi blamed his victims for his offences, showed no remorse and there was a real risk of him ruining another young girl's life if he was left to go free after a shorter sentence.
