Background
The Dominion Post, May 29th 2004
A Wwellington woman was told she was going to know what it was like to be raped shortly before a Wainuiomata man attacked her, spending hours frightening and humiliating her. Wellington District Court judge Tony Adeane said yesterday that Aaron Hamish Sullivan, 28, labourer, had deceived his victim to get into her home then subjected her to a prolonged attack. Sullivan had pleaded guilty to sexual violation by rape, indecent assault, breach of a protection order and assault with a weapon. He had been freed from prison in December last year.
In April, after taking methamphetamine, he met a woman he knew. Early on Anzac Day he went to her home and said the police had forbidden him to drive so he would have to stay the night. Judge Adeane said Sullivan went into her bedroom and grabbed one breast, forcing the woman on to her back before making her have sex. He told her she deserved everything she got and would know what it was like to be raped. The judge said Sullivan's actions were designed to cause his victim the maximum amount of fear and humiliation. At one point the victim was so frightened she begged Sullivan to get on with it, believing he intended to kill her.
She did not escape till hours later when Sullivan fell asleep. Judge Adeane said Sullivan was motivated by more than the usual lust that accompanied sex offending, also by jealousy and anger and a desire to humiliate her. He said Sullivan had a long history of disadvantage, being made a state ward at 12 and the emotional deprivation of his upbringing was revealed in his callous offending. The judge said Sullivan was also high on P, which seemed to bring out the worst in people. He jailed Sullivan for 6 years 6 months.
