Background
The Nelson Mail 26th September 2007
A convicted paedophile has been sent back to prison after being caught
twice in the company of children, despite his release conditions.
In the Nelson District Court on Tuesday Stephen Joseph Strang, 46, was sentenced to six months in prison after he admitted he had breached his release conditions by being in the company of a child. The court heard that Strang had been ordered not to have any direct or indirect contact with a child under 16 years of age, but had twice breached that condition.
The first time was on April 14, and Strang was told on July 10 that he would be sentenced on the breach if he appeared in court again within the next nine months. On September 10, Work and Income reported that Strang had driven from Christchurch to Nelson in a car with a baby less than 18 months old, who he said needed to be taken back to her mother. Child Youth and Family Services said Strang did not have a baby daughter.
The court heard that Strang was a high risk offender for sexual assaults against young children, and had not had counselling treatment because he continued to deny his offending. Defence lawyer Michael Vesty said Strang had been in the car with a young boy, not a girl, who was a friend's child. They had gone to a Work and Income office so Strang could ask for money to get back to Nelson from Christchurch.
Mr Vesty said the April breach happened when Strang's son was brought to his house by his mother, as Strang had suffered a back injury. Judge David McKegg said Strang had prior convictions which involved indecent assault on girls under 12. Release conditions had been imposed to protect the public and Judge McKegg said he was concerned Strang may reoffend. He sentenced Strang to six months in prison and said he could not apply for home detention.
