Background
From Taranaki Daily News story 9th December 2006
CONVICTED rapist Warren Nigel Sones yesterday walked out of the dock and signed a cheque to his victim for $7000. The cheque, handed over with an additional $3000 in the New Plymouth District Court, was ordered by Judge Louis Bidois as emotional harm reparation.
As well as the payment, Judge Bidois sentenced Sones to six years' jail for the rape of the 12-year-old, and three charges of indecent assault.
Earlier, Crown prosecutor James Gurnick told the court that Sones' victim and her family had been traumatised by the after- effects of his crime. Even Sones' defence counsel, Andrew Laurenson, described his client's behaviour as a disgrace. Judge Bidois said Sones had made his victim's life hell for two years during the offending.
The victim, the court heard, was planning to give the $10,000 to the Mellowpuff Trust, a charity set up by the family of cancer victim Melissa Long. Judge Bidois urged her to not be hasty in giving all the money away. He suggested she use it to pay for some of her future education costs.
