Sentenced to three years in September 1999
Background
From the Christchurch Press September 1999
A Black Power gang member with patches yelled "Is that all?" from a Wellington District Court gallery as a man was sentenced to three years jail for the sexual abuse of a girl. Kevin William Smith, 36, of Upper Hutt, had pleaded guilty to charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, doing an indecent act, and indecent assault of the girl during a two- year period ending in 1989.
The Black Power member yelled "Where is the justice?" as he walked out of the court. Judge Patrick Keane, in sentencing Smith, said he was facing a four-year term, but an admission to police during his first interview, an early guilty plea, and a lack of relevant convictions counted for him. The offences had a heavy impact on the victim's life who felt she had been deprived of her childhood and was only now coming to terms with the abuse, Judge Keane said.
