Sentenced to 3 years 3 months in August 2004
Background
From the Daily News 19th August 2004
A HAWERA tanker driver who abducted and sexually assaulted a woman was
yesterday jailed for three years and three months.
Paul Maurice Skedgwell (44) was last month found guilty by a jury of abducting the woman and sexual violation. He was found not guilty of one count of indecent assault, and a second charge was dismissed. Judge Louis Bidois said the victim was acquainted with Skedgwell, who had been to her workplace.
On October 29 last year he pulled up beside the victim as she was walking along the street and after speaking to her, forced her into his car. Skedgwell then drove the woman, who was too frightened to protest, to a rural area where he sexually assaulted her.
Judge Bidois said that, in a victim impact statement, the woman had said she had brought shame on her family and felt guilty, angry, sad and dirty. The incident, which lasted about half an hour, had affected her relationship with her husband and dominated conversation between them, said the judge. "She will never forget this incident."
The judge said the victim struck him as someone who would not have the ability or character to protest against what was happening. Whatever made the accused think she was consenting "was all in your mind". Lawyer Julian Hannam-Williams said the incident was out of character for Skedgwell.
