Background
The Press, Christchurch, April 28 2006
Police say a Christchurch man who has appeared in court became infatuated with a young woman he allegedly sexually attacked.
John Scanlan, 45, unemployed, faces four charges of sexual violation. Police opposed bail, fearing Scanlan would try to talk the woman out of continuing with the charges. They said he had "seemingly become infatuated" with her and had made about 110 calls to a cellphone he had given her.
Christchurch District Court Judge John Bisphan granted bail on strict conditions, including that Scanlan not contact the woman or her family. "The nature of the alleged offending is very serious, but he has the presumption of innocence at this stage." Defence counsel Serina Bailey said Scanlan would defend the charges. He had the support of his partner, she said. The judge remanded the case until May 25 for a pre-depositions conference.
