Malcolm David Rollo, a former Tokanui Hospital patient with limited intellectual ability, has been sentenced to preventive detention by the High Court in Hamilton on eight sex charges involving three children. Under preventive detention Rollo, 42, must serve a minimum of five years' jail, and can be released only at the discretion of the Parole Board and the Corrections Department. Rollo faced three charges of indecent assault and one charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection after sexually abusing a girl in a sleepout last year.

Crown prosecutor Philip Crayton said Rollo had already been convicted of indecent assault on the girl in 1999, for which he served a year's jail. The four remaining charges included inducing an indecent act, doing an indecent act with intent to offend and two charges of indecent assault, following incidents with two brothers in 1990 and 1991. Justice Williams said it was clear the three victims, whom Rollo met after befriending their families, had difficulty coping with Rollo's actions. He also sentenced Rollo to five years' jail (concurrent) on the charges involving the boys.
