Sentenced to seven years in March 1999
Background
From the Daily News 12 March 1999
SEVEN years' jail was imposed in the High Court in Auckland yesterday on an Eltham man appearing for sentence on two rape charges. Last month a High Court jury in New Plymouth had found Thomas Heretaunga Rogers (22) guilty of two charges of raping a 14-year-old girl at Eltham on May 31 last year.
Yesterday Justice Laurenson said the sentence was less than would perhaps usually be imposed for such offending -- he had taken into account Rogers' previously unblemished record and the fact that he had been holding a stable job and had just bought his own house. The judge wanted to give him a sentence which would allow him some hope. During the two-day trial, the jury heard that Rogers met the girl about 4am on Eltham's High St; he took her home and twice raped her.
