An Auckland man has been jailed for 15 years for sexually violating a hitchhiker and another women he picked up in his car.
In the Hamilton District Court on Wednesday, Murray Robertson, a 50-year-old unemployed father of three from Manurewa, was sentenced on three charges of sexual violation and one charge of kidnapping.
The court heard how on January 11 last year Robertson picked up a 25-year-old woman who was hitch-hiking from Hamilton to Paeroa. Robertson offered to take the woman to Paeroa but instead drove her to a motel in Katikati where he made sexual advances on her. The woman refused and left the motel but Robertson followed her, apologised, and said he would take her to Paeroa. He then drove her to a secluded location where he sexually violated her.
The other charges related to Robertson picking up a confused and intoxicated women near the Auckland police station on March 13, 1995. The court heard how the women was on medication and had been drinking earlier in the night and probably thought she knew Robertson. Robertson took the woman to Clevedon and raped and sexually violated her. Judge Robert Spear said the most disturbing feature of the case was Robertson's criminal history which dated back to 1967 and included the rape of a 17-year-old girl. He ordered that the minimum non-parole period be 10 years.
