Background
From Dominion Post story July 2003
A 12-year-old barricaded herself in a toilet after she was sexually violated by her friend's father, police say. Joe Hohepa Renata, 51, truck driver, of Whakatu, who appeared in Hastings District Court yesterday, pleaded guilty to sexually violating the girl at his home on May 6. The case made headlines last month when the principal of the girl's school told other pupils why she had been missing from class, and Victim Support called for him to be prosecuted for revealing the girl's identity.
A police summary said Renata arrived home drunk about 9pm and found the girl asleep in his lounge with his two children. He sexually violated her and tried to kiss her. She woke up and kicked Renata before barricading herself in the toilet. Renata forced his way into the toilet and told the girl he was sorry. He confessed to police and claimed his actions were because he was drunk. Judge Tony Adeane refused to continue name suppression for Renata after being told the girl wanted him named. Renata was remanded on bail for sentencing on August 11.
