Background

A man's sexual violation of a woman was "a sheer exhibition of power with intent to humiliate her", said Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen Erber. He jailed Michael Clarence Ranson for three years for the incident at a gathering in Ashburton in May 2005. The judge said Ranson's activities had had "a significant effect on the victim". "Her sleep is disturbed and she has at the moment given up any question of sexual contact with male partners."
Ranson, a 38-year-old meat worker, had been found guilty of one charge of sexual violation by digital penetration after a jury trial in Timaru. Judge Erber said Ranson had wanted the woman to perform an errand for him, and when she declined he inserted his fingers into her genitalia and held them there. This caused her to suffer considerable discomfort and she told Ranson this attention was unwelcome, he said. "This was not a sexual attack in the way it is commonly understood. This was a demonstration by you of your power over this young woman to enforce your authority and humiliate her."
Defence counsel James Rapley said Ranson maintained he was not guilty but accepted the jury had given its verdict. The probation report considered him a low risk of reoffending. Judge Erber said Ranson seemed to have a problem with drink. His criminal record consisted mainly of driving and drink-driving convictions. He had one conviction for assault.
