Background
The victim met Peterson outside a Manurewa pub in September 1998. They had met each other through the victim's cousin. All three had been drinking and socialising together that afternoon. Later that evening Peterson gave the victim a ride home. He instead took her away without her consent. He repeatedly raped her at knifepoint and indecently assaulted her.
