An Auckland man who stalked and raped or sexually violated women has been sentenced to preventive detention by Justice Fisher in the High Court at Auckland . Police said what they found most disturbing was that when Peter Peeni committed the attacks on women last year he had been out of prison just 10 days, after serving a sentence for almost identical violations five years earlier. Peeni, 28, unemployed of New Lynn, was earlier convicted on a series of charges including rape, assault with intent to commit sexual violation, aggravated robbery and abduction. Detective Senior Sergeant Jim Gallagher said yesterday that anything other than preventive detention would have been a travesty of justice.
"This guy was described as a sexual predator and it was recognised in court that right now he posed a serious risk to the public and would reoffend in the same way if he was on the street." On October 31 last year, in separate incidents, Peeni stalked three mothers from Auckland shopping centres. The last attack resulted in the knife-point rape of a Kohimarama woman while her seven-year-old daughter was in another room. Several hours earlier he had tied up a Massey woman in her home and robbed her at knifepoint before running off. After publicity on last year's attacks, a friend of one of Peeni's 1993 victims was so stunned by the similarity of the attacks that she contacted police. This led to his capture, Mr Gallagher said.
