Alfred Raymond Andrew Paulsen (43), unemployed, was yesterday sentenced to 18 months jail on two charges of indecently assaulting a child under the age of 12. Judge David Saunders said both offences had been committed when Paulsen had been in a position of trust.

Originally, he had been charged with unlawful sexual connection but had pleaded guilty to amended charges of indecent assault. That had been before a trial. He appeared for sentence yesterday in the Dunedin District Court. Paulsen's counsel, Mr John Westgate, said the offending had involved no violence and occurred at a time when Paulsen had been drinking heavily. He had an acknowledged alcohol problem.

Mr Westgate said Paulsen realised he was facing a prison term but should be given credit for his plea of guilty. Judge Saunders said the long term effects of such sexual abuse on young children were unknown. People like Paulsen needed treatment and young children had to be protected from such people. A prison sentence would ensure a period of sobriety so Paulsen could be assessed for the Kaimarama treatment programme at Rolleston Prison.

The judge sentenced Paulsen to 18 months jail on each charge, the terms to run concurrently. This would allow sufficient time for Paulsen's assessment for Kaimarama and his completion of the course. He refused an application by Mr Westgate for final name suppression for Paulsen. Mr Robin Bates appeared for the Crown in the case.
