Background
From the Southland Times 30th June 2011
A Southland man accused of sex crimes against a boy over the course of 10 years has been found guilty on nine of the charges he faced. It took the jury just over five hours to find Tracy William Palmer, 41, guilty of four charges of sexual violation, two charges of doing an indecent act on a boy under 12, one charge of being party to sexual violation, and two charges of indecently assaulting a boy aged between 12 and 16. He was found not guilty on a second charge of being party to sexual violation and was earlier discharged on a fifth charge of sexual violation.
Eight of the verdicts were unanimous, while two were delivered as an 11-1 majority. The trial started on Monday when the jury was told by the now-33-year-old complainant that Palmer had regularly offended against him, including forcing him to perform oral sex and engage in sexual behaviour with his sister. The offending occurred between 1986 and 1996 and was often while Palmer was babysitting the boy and his siblings, the jury was told.
Palmer denied the allegations and the complainant's sister also told the jury she and her brother had not been forced to have sex and she had never seen any sexual contact between Palmer and her brother. In her closing statement, Crown solicitor Mary-Jane Thomas labelled Palmer, who has previous convictions for sexually offending against children, as "an incredibly cunning, manipulative predator". Justice French remanded Palmer to August 2 for sentence.
