A JAIL sentence awaits Michael Ian O'Brien after he admitted a number of historical sexual offences when he appeared in the Hawera District Court yesterday.

O'Brien, 40, unemployed of Hawera, admitted charges of sexual violation, attempted sexual violation and indecent assault. The court heard the charges date back as far as the late 1980s.

A bail application by defence counsel Kelly Marriner was rejected by Judge Allan Roberts who said it was inevitable the defendant would receive a prison sentence. O'Brien will be sentenced on November 11.
