In the Auckland High Court, Justice Kit Toogood said the horror of abuse Nikoia inflicted on his former partner and his son involved repeatedly raping his former partner, sodomising her and forcing her to have oral sex. He attacked his former partner with a beer bottle. He battered her using AV cables, a chair, a hammer, a thick cord and punched her. Also Nikoia beating his son with a cord, pulling out his hair, having grabbed his son by the hair and shook him, having hit his son on the head using a metal lighter, punching him in the stomach and ribs. The judge described the sexual abuse Nikoia inflicted on his former partner as "degrading and humiliating".
