Background
From Waikato Times story March 25th 2009
A Huntly teenager who bashed and raped a woman by the Waikato River sat impassively as his victim recounted the ordeal to a court yesterday. Judd Nelson, 17, was sentenced at the Hamilton District Court to seven years' jail after he was found guilty of rape, aggravated wounding and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle following a four-day trial last month.
The charges related to a late-night assault in May last year in Huntly. The court heard that Nelson was out socialising when he met his victim. They later drove to a secluded boat ramp. Nelson punched the woman in the face, knocking her unconscious, and raped her. He then drove off in the woman's car, leaving her unconscious and half-naked by the river bank.
During the sentencing, the woman asked to read a letter to the court, describing the devastating effect the attack had on her and her family. The woman said she now suffered from depression and panic attacks and lived in constant fear of being assaulted. "I don't think I will ever be the same again," she said.
