Morris and the 24 year old university student were hitchhiking from Devonport into Auckland when he threw the woman into some bushes and sexually attacked her. Morris threatened her with a piece of wood and struck her several times and when it became clear he would not let her go she became frightened for her life and ran half-naked onto the road where a motorist stopped to help. The woman became pregnant from the rape and had an abortion. The court was told she would never be able to erase memories of that night and was now unable to have trusting and relaxed relationships with males.
