A Winchester man was sentenced to two years' imprisonment when he appeared in the Timaru District Court yesterday charged with doing an indecent act on a six-year-old girl. Anthony Larry Roy Momo, 46, a student, had previously admitted the charge, which occurred in the house he was staying at on May 8. The girl was asleep in a room Momo had to pass through to reach his bed, she woke after 1.30am to find him performing the act, which was described by Judge Edward Ryan as one of "self-gratification".

Counsel Jocelyn Munro said Momo was not proud of what happened and felt pain, hurt and regret. He recognised he needed help and was looking for that help. While it was a serious offence, it was not aggravated by violence or aggression, she said. There was no physical harm to the victim. His prison sentence in 1992 was for more serious incidents involving a complainant of similar age to the most recent victim. Momo had been released in 1994 and had stayed out of trouble since then.

Judge Ryan said he was sad to hear of Momo's past, but the defendant was responsible for his own behaviour. The reasonably prompt plea of guilty had saved the complainant having to give evidence. The offending was not as intrusive or invasive as was often complained of in such matters. But the victim was aware of what was happening and the judge said he had to take into account the effects on her and her family. In reaching the two-year prison term, the judge discounted six months for Momo's early guilty plea.
