Background
Northern Advocate story here
A Dargaville man has been jailed for six years after a year of serious sexual abuse that left a girl feeling "dirty and betrayed". The young victim fled in tears from Whangarei District Court yesterday as she tried to read out her victim impact report. A victim support officer instead told the court how Iain Graham McEwen, 39, had left the girl too scared to sleep without the light on or go anywhere without her mum or teddy bear.
"I still feel yucky and dirty. I can't scrub my skin clean. It feels like I have bugs crawling around on my skin," the girl had written in a letter to Judge Keith de Ridder. The victim also pleaded with the judge to lock McEwen away in jail so she could feel safe.
McEwen had admitted his guilt to three charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, four charges of indecent assault and one charge of performing an indecent act on the girl. Some of the charges are representative, meaning they happened on more than one occasion over a year-long period.
