Background
Matangi inflicted serious facial injuries on a 53 year old woman in Plimmerton on the 1st of January 1991, attacking her about 8 AM as she walked beside the main road. Her jaw, eye sockets and nose were broken in the attack and she needed stitches for two cuts. She spent 18 days in hospital and was off work for three months. She required extensive plastic surgery. An off-duty policeman out for a jog came upon the scene and was set upon by Matangi and was also injured. The officer's wife, a nurse, happened to pass and was able to assist the woman.
