Background
From the Sunday News 18th October 2009
A FORMER Maori Party candidate is behind bars after being found guilty of sexually violating a six-year-old student he met while working at a kohanga reo. Kelvin Andrew Martin was found guilty on Friday of sexually violating the girl and committing two indecent acts on her at his Massey, west Auckland home. The 49-year-old also faced a charge of filming child pornography – allegedly using equipment borrowed from a kohanga reo, where he was employed as an office administrator – but was found not guilty.
The High Court at Auckland heard Martin – who stood for Parliament in 2005 as a Maori Party candidate – met his victim while working at the West Harbour kohanga reo where his wife was then, and remains, employed as a teacher. Martin's wife told Sunday News she is supporting and standing by her husband but refused to comment further. The High Court heard how the victim's mother went on a trip and left her child with the kohanga reo couple. During the girl's stay, Martin indecently assaulted her – warning: "Don't tell mum, it's a secret."
The victim – whose name is suppressed – disclosed the abuse to her mother and a complaint was made to the west Auckland child abuse team. Following the guilty verdicts, Martin was remanded in custody. Prosecutor Philip Hamlin said the crown would seek a jail term for Martin when he is sentenced in December. And Sunday News can reveal when police arrested Martin for the offences against the six-year-old, he was already serving home detention for other child sex crimes. In 2008, Martin – who won 0.82% of the candidate votes in Te Atatu during the 2005 general election – was convicted of grooming a person under the age of 16 for sex, and also of possessing objectionable material.
His arrest for those crimes followed an investigation by the Auckland City district child exploitation team, whose officers posed on the internet as children and talked with Martin. In one chat room discussion Martin asked a so-called teenage girl to travel with him to Northland and told her: "You will learn more with me than attending school." Police arrested Martin after he arranged to meet the teen. His house, vehicle and kohanga reo office were searched by police and thousands of child porn images were located. National MP Tau Henare said he knew Martin. The two met in 2003 when they were on the Te Atatu Marae Development Board. "This is shocking but my attitude to paedophiles is to throw away the key," Henare said of Martin's most recent convictions.
