Background
Southland Times story here
An Invercargill man who performed indecent acts with his friend's young daughter was sentenced to jail when he appeared in the Invercargill District Court.
Thomas Finbarr Manning, 46, appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips on Tuesday on three charges of doing an indecent act in front of a child between July 1, 2007, and December 30, 2007. Judge Phillips denied Manning leave to apply for home detention and sentenced him to 21 months' jail.
The police summary of facts says Manning became a friend of the victim's family through a working relationship with her father. On July 9 or 10, Manning took the victim to Arrowtown for the night, to help her mother out. He did an indecent act in front of the victim and asked her to video it, and in the morning said it was "their own little secret", the summary says.
The second incident occurred in Manning's Invercargill home when he approached the victim naked and asked to be shaved. The third incident happened when Manning was babysitting the victim in her own home, before the end of 2007.
