The parents of an eight-year-old girl sexually assaulted as she lay in bed felt they had failed her by being unable to protect her from her attacker.

The details were revealed in Hastings District Court today as Christopher John Mabey, 31, of Napier, was jailed for three years on one charge of unlawful sexual connection with the girl and one charge of inducing the girl to perform an indecent act in February 2002.
