Background
From Waikato Times story Nov 23rd 1996
Indecent assault is a "serious charge" in New Zealand, a Cambodian-born man has
been told in court.
Chun Kong, 66, unemployed, of Hamilton, was appearing for sentence yesterday in Hamilton District Court after earlier admitting indecently assaulting a 13- year-old girl. Judge V R Jamieson adjourned sentencing to December 3 to see if a community programme would be suitable for the accused.
The judge told Chun Kong that indecent assault was a serious charge in New Zealand, but he recognised that Kong's culture in his home country might be slightly different. "I am prepared to make some allowance, and a prison term could be suspended, but I want you to get the message loud and clear that this conduct is not allowed."
