Sentenced to 8 years 6 months with a 4 year non-parole period in August 2009
Background
From the Christchurch Press August 2009
The man a family trusted to care for their 13-year-old daughter instead repeatedly raped and sexually violated the girl over six months, a court heard. The girl said she was subject to a makutu (curse) and was seeing ghosts. David Wharara Keepa, a sickness beneficiary, said he could help, but instead exploited the trust and vulnerability of the girl. Keepa, 47, earlier pleaded guilty to four charges of sexual violation and three of committing an indecent act. He was jailed for 8 years 6 months when he appeared for sentence in the Christchurch District Court.
Keepa who the court heard suffered from physical and mental health issues moved into a ground floor bedroom opposite the teenager after injuring his back. Judge Raoul Neave said Keepa took advantage of his proximity to the girl to make their relationship a sexual one. Keepa's lawyer, Michael Knowles, said his client accepted his guilt. Crown lawyer Ruth Thomas said Keepa had breached his victim's trust. He used emotional blackmail to pressure the girl to perform sexual acts. From a 13-year starting point, Judge Neave gave Keepa credit for his guilty plea and health issues in setting an 8 yea 6 monthr jail term. He then imposed a four-year non-parole term.
