Background
Story from the Christchurch Press 6th December 1996
A man with an ``extremely impressive background'' in the church and Samoan community was jailed for eight years when he appeared in the High Court in Christchurch for sexual offences. Sio Kaio, 50, pleaded guilty last month to charges of rape, unlawful sexual
connection, and indecent assault on a 13-year-old girl.
The offences were committed between June and September this year. Justice Chisholm said yesterday that Kaio had let his family, himself, and his friends down. The victim had come to the house after being sexually abused by others. The victim impact and psychiatric reports indicated the abuse she had suffered had had a deep impact, but Kaio was not solely responsible for that.
Justice Chisholm said that at times the victim seems to have been driven to the depths of despair. ``Your abuse seems to have been the final straw as far as she is concerned. Inevitably she will have long-term psychiatric problems, but she has demonstrated remarkable resilience.''
Counsel Garry Collin outlined the serious illness suffered by Kaio's wife and mother-in-law, and said they may live out the rest of their natural lives with Kaio in jail. Mr Collin said Kaio was extremely sorry for what he had done, and he wanted to express his regret. Kaio admitted his offending immediately to the police and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. It was Kaio's first court appearance.
Story from the Christchurch Press 15th November 1996
A man who raped and assaulted a 13-year-old girl over a period of three months was convicted of three sexual offences in the Christchurch District Court yesterday.
Sio Kaio, 50, a plastics extractor, pleaded guilty to charges of rape, unlawful sexual connection, and indecent assault. Judge Stephen Erber remanded him in custody to December 5 for a victim impact report, probation report, and sentencing. Police prosecutor Sergeant Jim Halligan said the three charges were representative of several offences that occurred between June and September this year.
Sergeant Halligan said that on occasions during the three months, Kaio went to the girl's room while other members of the house were sleeping. He raped, indecently assaulted, and sexually molested her. The visits occurred about once a week.
