Background
From a Christchurch Press story 17/12/1999
The mother of a 14-year-old girl allowed sexual activity between her and a 38-year-oldman provided he stopped short of intercourse, the High Court in Christchurch was told. Anthony David Jones admitted four charges of indecent assault between December 1 last year and the end of January this year, and was sentenced to 2 1/2 years jail by Justice Chisholm. Jones collapsed in the dock during the sentencing and the court was adjourned briefly. Justice Chisholm said it was suggested the girl's parents had permitted sexual activity between their daughter and Jones. "No parent has the right to allow anyone to commit an offence against a child," he said. Jones had been previously convicted of indecent assault and rape in 1990. Justice Chisholm said the nature of the offending was an aggravating factor.
We are advised Jones is a graduate of the Kia Marama programme, but according to the probation officer he has not made a lot of use of the information and guidance that was provided by the Kia Marama programme. Despite that the probation officer assessed him as still remaining a high risk of reoffending.
