Name suppression has been lifted for an elderly Wanganui man charged with 26 sexual assault offences against three boys under 16. Neville Ernest Hearling, a 75-year-old pensioner yesterday appeared in Wanganui District Court, where Judge Michael Radford said he could see no compelling reasons to allow name suppression to continue. Hearling is charged with indecent assault against boys aged 12-16 and under 16, intercourse by penetration of boys under 16, and indecent acts against boys under 16. The offending allegedly occurred in Auckland in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, when Hearling was a rugby league and softball coach.

Police prosecutor Sergeant David Grey said the alleged offending were high-profile sexual assaults stemming from his abuse of a position of trust built up with the victims. Hearling's case has now been transferred to Auckland District Court, where a large number of the more than 20 witnesses lived. "Justice can best be seen to be done in the community where the incidents are alleged to have occurred," Judge Radford said. Hearling's case is due to be called in Auckland District Court on March 31, but Judge Radford has excused Hearling's non-appearance in advance.
