Background
From the Southland Times Feb 20, 1999
A 54-YEAR-OLD Riversdale man was yesterday sentenced to a total of four and half years' jail for rape and indecent assault when he appeared before Justice Chisholm of Christchurch in the High Court at Invercargill.
John Trevor Harrington had earlier admitted a charge of indecent assault and was last week found guilty by a jury of a representative charge of rape of a girl under 12. The charges date back to incidents in Katea between August 12, 1972, and February 2, 1973. Justice Chisholm handed down four and a half years for the rape and a year for the indecent assault.
He said the victim impact statement showed the "devastating web of destruction as far as this girl was concerned." Justice Chisholm said he had to weigh mitigating factors with aggravating factors in deciding on sentence. Counsel Andy Woods appeared for Harrington with crown solicitor Alistair Garland prosecuting.
