Background
From the Nelson Mail 1st July 2009
Police have uncovered graphic child pornography images on a Nelson man's
computer, a court was told.
David John Goodman, 42, admitted 10 charges of possessing objectionable material when he appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday. Police prosecutor Sergeant Wayne Johnston told the court that between May 3 and August 27, 2008, Goodman downloaded and saved objectionable material on his laptop and external hard drive using the Internet file-sharing programme Limewire. It included extremely graphic videos and still images depicting children of both sexes.
On August 27, police seized Goodman's laptop and hard drive, Mr Johnston said. They found 443 objectionable files on the hard drive, including 144 pictures, 21 videos and 278 stories of an explicit sexual nature detailing bestiality, paedophilia and rape, and 41 files on the laptop featuring 32 pictures, seven videos and two stories.
Goodman admitted searching for and downloading child pornography, and said he knew it was objectionable. He said he started doing it out of boredom and could not stop. Mr Johnston said the 10 charges related to content representative of the files found on the laptop and hard drive.
Defence lawyer Brett Daniell-Smith asked for home detention to be considered. Remanding him on bail, Judge Tony Zohrab ordered a probation and home detention report, but warned Goodman that all options were available at sentencing which will occur August 21.
