Sentenced to three years in September 1996
Background
From the Herald September 7th 1996
A Paeroa man who abused four young boys during the late 1970's and early 1980's has been sentenced to three years jail.
Peter Ernest Fowler, a 35 year old yard foreman, was found guilty by a high court jury in Hamilton in July on six charges of indecent assault and three of doing an indecent act. The charges related to four boys aged 6 to 15 at the time
The jury found Fowler not guilty of eight other sex charges, involving another boy and a girl. Sentencing Fowler in the High Court at Auckland yesterday, Justice Hammond said in a systematic way he had taken advantage of the boys in various places around the Hauraki Plains and Waikato. The abuse has had "serious cumulative effects" on the victims, the judge said.
As a result some now suffered depression and suicidal tendencies, were unable to work, or form relationships. He said the approach of the court must be to deter this kind of offending, protect young children and show society's condemnation.
Fowler's lawyer, Greg Hollister-Jones, said Fowler was now married with two young children and the offending, which occurred when he was aged between 16 and 24, was completely out of character. Imprisonment would cause his family "great emotional and financial hardship" and be a "particularly harsh punishment" for Fowler who he described as "physically and emotionally vulnerable".
