For years Hamilton man Maurice John Faiers systematically abused three young boys. In the High Court at Hamilton yesterday the 70-year-old pleaded guilty to six charges of indecently assaulting boys under 12, one of doing an indecent act on a boy under 12, attempting to have unlawful sexual connection with a boy under 12 and one charge of doing an indecent act to offend. He pleaded not guilty to unlawful sexual connection with a boy under 12 and two charges of doing an indecent act to offend. These charges were dismissed. Faiers was given bail after his first court appearance earlier this year, sparking a flier campaign from victims' families warning parents living in his area about the "repeat offender".

Faiers was jailed for a year in 1985 after being convicted of doing an indecent act on a girl aged between 12 and 16. Yesterday his lawyer Tom Sutcliffe applied for bail for Faiers until his sentencing next year. He said Faiers had complied with his bail conditions to date with no indication of offending while on bail. He said Faiers could pay up to $18,000 compensation to his victims, whose families were in court. Crown prosecutor Philip Crayton said Faiers had systematically abused three boys. "These children have been robbed of their childhood." He said Faiers would face at least seven years in prison. Justice Harrison denied the bail application.

Maurice Faiers looked over at the family of one of his victims sitting in the High Court at Hamilton yesterday and grinned as Justice Tony Randerson handed down his prison sentence. It was another blow for a family struggling to pull themselves together after the 70-year-old Hamilton man befriended their 9-year- old son then preyed on him sexually for more than a year. "He has no remorse," said the boy's mother, who cannot be named. Faiers was sentenced to eight years in prison for sex crimes against three boys, all under the age of 12, between 1997 and 2002. He pleaded guilty to seven charges of indecencies against them, one of attempted sexual violation and one of doing an indecent act, at the start of his trial last year

He had already spent 12 months in prison after being convicted of doing an indecent act with a girl aged 12 to 16 in 1996. Psychiatric reports say he has a tendency towards paedophilia, shows no remorse, and poses a real risk to the public. Faiers groomed his first victim -- an intellectually disabled boy -- in 1997. He made friends with the boy's grandparents and the boy visited Faiers from the age of 6 until he was 11. The boy, now 15, is sometimes sexually inappropriate and has been shunted between foster homes. Faiers told his second victim not to tell anyone because "he could go to jail". It was that boy's mother whom Faiers grinned at when he was sentenced yesterday. The Waikato Times spoke to the boy and his mother before the sentencing.

The boy said he called Faiers "Mr Dead," because he wished he was. His mother said she had told him not to go to Faiers' house. But Faiers spent months grooming her son. "He always had my favourite drink and lollies in the fridge for me," the boy said. Faiers was arrested for offences against her son and the other boys last year after the 10-year-old spoke up. But Faiers was given bail. The boy's mother took matters into her own hands then, delivering flyers around the neighbourhood warning people about Faiers."I took great delight in delivering one into his letterbox," she said. Faiers was carrying it in his bag when he appeared for trial and pleaded guilty last year. She later discovered there were three men living in her neighbourhood with sexual tendencies towards young children.

The family has had to move house and the boy's mother says they will be living with what Faiers has done for the rest of their lives. Faiers' third victim was enticed the same way as her son: lollies at the shop down the road, money then kissing which eventually progressed further. Faiers even had the boys video him doing indecencies and kept a diary of how he would approach the offending against each of his victims. Yesterday, Crown prosecutor Philip Crayton asked for preventive detention for the man he said had predatory ways and posed a risk to the public. His lawyer Tom Sutcliffe conceded Faiers' offending had had devastating effects and asked for a lengthy finite sentence. Justice Randerson said the diary found by police showed Faiers' "calculated and premeditated behaviour in relation to these boys."
