Background
From the Christchurch Press here
A sickness beneficiary sagged in the dock when told he was being jailed for five and-a-half years for sex offences against children. Leonard Joseph de Thierry, 58, had to be helped out of the Christchurch District Court to begin his sentence. Judge Stephen Erber said both victims would have the impact of the offending with them for the rest of their lives. De Thierry was appearing for sentence after admitting three representative charges of sexual violation, two relating to a girl and one relating to a boy, and specific charges of sexual violation of the girl, and indecently assaulting the boy. The offending began when the girl was nine and continued for four years. The two years of offending against the boy began when he was 14.
Counsel Raoul Neave said De Thierry had pleaded guilty before trial when the number of charges was reduced from 12. The offending had occurred on a limited number of occasions, and seemed to have stopped of its own accord. Crown prosecutor Leah Robertson said the offending had occurred over a period of years and the damage to the victims was likely to be permanent. Judge Erber said it was clear that de Thierry was in a state of depression and anxiety. He had not impressed the probation officer who described him as "vague and evasive and inclined to place his offending at a distance from reality". De Thierry interrupted the judge to say that he had been having hearing problems at the time of the interview with the probation officer. He said de Thierry's guilty pleas "have had a good effect on the victims, because they have at least had the satisfaction of an admission by you". He imposed concurrent jail terms on each offence, with the total term of 5 years 6 months.
