Background
From the Press (Christchurch) May 31 2005
A Westport paedophile has been jailed for repeatedly sexually abusing a girl in a way that continues to haunt her, 15 years later.
Kevin John Collins, 49, a spraypainter, was found guilty of sexual offences spanning seven years starting in 1990, when the girl was aged eight.
Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen Erber sentenced Collins to eight years jail, with an order that he serve at least 4 1/2 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Collins's record included an earlier conviction for indecently assaulting a young girl in 1998.
The judge said it was hard to discern any mitigating factors, since Collins's continued denial of the offending showed he had no remorse. Although the offending did not extend to rape, the judge said it was close to it because Collins was found guilty of a representative charge of sexual violation for indecencies committed.
"This sort of offending occurred very frequently," the judge said. "The victim-impact report is a very sad document. She lives with the effect of the abuse every day and the effect on her has been profound. "She is in no way a person who might be described as hysterical (but) she suffers from an eating disorder, her social life has been curtailed and her working life has been affected."
