When police found Clarke he initially denied any wrongdoing. Detective Sergeant Anita Paterson of Christchurch describes him as a calculating "sexual predator" who had probably offended in between the two known rapes. Clarke displayed absolutely no contrition in court for his actions apart from what appeared to be a smug look on his face. The nature of the offences, his lack of remorse and lack of understanding and insight into his offending shows he remains at high risk of reoffending. The victims' families say their daughters have become withdrawn, left school, quit their jobs and pushed away family and friends since the attacks.
