Background
From Dominion Post story May 28, 2003
A Tawa man plied a group of 14-year-old girls with alcohol before sexually
violating two of them, Porirua District Court was told yesterday.
John Vincent Burke, 55, a salesman, pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual violation. Police then withdrew two indecent assault charges. Police prosecutor Jeff Agnew said Burke befriended a girl who had been working at his home and encouraged her to bring her friends to the house.
On April 12, Burke held a party for six girls at his home. Before it started he took some of them to a nearby liquor store and supermarket where he bought beer and spirits. At the party the girls became increasingly intoxicated. One of them vomited in the bathroom and was in a semi-comatose state on the floor. Burke picked her up and carried her into his bedroom where he sexually assaulted her. The girl unsuccessfully resisted his advances.
Later, Burke took some of the other girls for a drive. After stopping the car to allow one of them out, he sexually assaulted another girl. They returned home where Burke offered to have sex with the remaining girls but all refused. Burke admitted the offences when police spoke to him three days later. Judge John Dalmer remanded Burke on bail for a probation report and sentencing in Wellington District Court on June 20.
