A sex offender, Patio Manu Blandford, 48, of New Plymouth, was sentenced to three years' jail on a representative charge of having sex with a girl aged between 12 and 16. Blandford pleaded guilty to the charge shortly after his jury trial had started in July. Mr Marinovich said Blandford had groomed the girl before offending against her.

Defence counsel Barry Henderson asked for a level of sympathy from the court because of Blandford's ill health. He said since his client had been on remand he had suffered two heart attacks and was suffering from heart disease. In handing down sentence, Judge Roberts said Blandford had used threats to manipulate the girl into having sex with him.
